Short-term memory for facial identity and emotion

چکیده
For some time the relationship between processing of facial expression and facial identity has been in dispute. We re-examined this relationship and evaluated whether the same relationship characterized both perception and short-term memory. In three experiments we examined perception and memory for realistic, synthetic human faces. Experiment 1 used subjects’ judgments to identify, from a large library of synthetic faces, a set of 60 faces that were best recognized as expressing particular categories of emotion. Experiment 2 used the selected faces in a short-term recognition task. Subjects had to identify whether the emotional expression on a probe stimulus face matched the emotional expression on either of two study faces. Results showed that identity strongly influenced recognition of emotional expression. Multidimensional scaling of similarity/dissimilarity judgments in Experiment 3 produced a 2dimensional description of the faces’ perceptual representation. Distances among stimuli in the MDS representation, which showed a strong linkage of emotional expression and facial identity, proved to be good predictors of correct and false recognitions in Experiment 2. The convergence of results from Experiments 2 and 3 suggests that the overall structure and configuration of the faces’ perceptual representation parallel their representation in short-term memory.

Short-term memory for emotional faces in dysphoria.
The study aimed to determine if the memory bias for negative faces previously demonstrated in depression and dysphoria generalises from long- to short-term memory. A total of 29 dysphoric (DP) and 22 non-dysphoric (ND) participants were presented with a series of faces and asked to identify the emotion portrayed (happiness, sadness, anger, or neutral affect). Following a delay, four faces were ...

متن کاملIndividual differences in neural activity during a facial expression vs. identity working memory task
Facial expressions of emotion constitute a critical portion of our non-verbal social interactions. In addition, the identity of the individual displaying this expression is critical to these interactions as they embody the context in which these expressions will be interpreted. To identify any overlapping and/or unique brain circuitry involved in the processing of these two information streams ...
متن کاملRetention interval affects visual short-term memory encoding.
Humans can efficiently store fine-detailed facial emotional information in visual short-term memory for several seconds. However, an unresolved question is whether the same neural mechanisms underlie high-fidelity short-term memory for emotional expressions at different retention intervals. Here we show that retention interval affects the neural processes of short-term memory encoding using a d...
